A new PS5 jailbreak called Relapse works on firmware as recent as version 13.6, released this past July.
Relapse dropped Tuesday and targets any PS5 that has not yet installed firmware 14.00.00, which Sony pushed out in mid-September. It chains a long-known WebKit bug in the PS5's browser into kernel write access, then installs an ELF loader so unsigned code can run. It is also faster than its predecessors, which could freeze a console for up to 50 minutes per attempt.
That two-month gap is the real story. Previous PS5 jailbreaks worked only on firmware versions that were years old, which meant most consoles still connected to PSN and updating normally were untouchable. Relapse shrinks that window dramatically, putting a much larger share of PS5s currently in homes within reach.
Sony will almost certainly patch the underlying WebKit flaw in a future update, as it has with past browser exploits. Until then, anyone who has not jumped to 14.00.00 is, whether they realize it or not, running a console that can be cracked open.
