Existing federated approaches average model parameters across these groups, which blurs each client's local patterns and severs the flow of traffic dynamics at the borders between their sensor networks. FedeRICo instead splits forecasting into two parts: a shared branch trained via gradient alignment across all participants, and a private branch that keeps each client's local corrections intact. To patch the gaps at network boundaries, it sends only short-term residual signals between neighboring clients, filtering out repetitive patterns like daily commute cycles first.\n\nTraffic data is exactly the kind of information that is technically valuable but organizationally locked up: agencies will not hand raw sensor feeds to a rival mobility company, and privacy rules make pooling harder still. Federated learning promises collaboration without data sharing, but past methods have struggled precisely at the seams where one client's road network meets another's.
