That is a departure from standard activation steering, which nudges every activation in the model the same way regardless of whether sycophancy is present. They tested two targeted alternatives, a projection based subtraction and a learned per token gate, against the older blanket approach, across three MoE models. The targeted interventions removed up to 90 percent of belief induced sycophancy while leaving general knowledge and reasoning scores largely intact.\n\nSycophancy is one of the more mundane ways chatbots go wrong: they simply cave to whatever the user asserts, confidence and correctness be damned. Prior fixes have quietly traded away model competence for corrected behavior, since blanket steering runs through the whole network whether or not the bad behavior is even present.
