Apple's next Mac mini and Mac Studio go on sale Tuesday, September 22, and the story is entirely under the hood.
The Mac mini now comes with M6 or M5 Pro chips, while the Mac Studio moves to M5 Max or M5 Ultra options. Apple calls the M6 its first 2nm chip and the M5 Ultra its most powerful yet. Both machines keep their existing enclosures - no new ports, no new look. Preorders opened August 25, so Tuesday is really just the day boxes start shipping to people who already clicked buy.
This is Apple running its playbook: ship the process-node jump quietly inside old hardware, save the redesign for later. It is also a reminder that "most powerful chip ever" is a permanent marketing state at Apple, true every cycle almost by definition. The real question is whether 2nm delivers a performance or efficiency jump big enough for anyone outside video editors and ML researchers to notice.
