The top level generates motion trajectories using physics-guided rectified flow matching in a VAE latent space, then speeds up sampling with a technique called Reflow so the robot can react in real time. Before any trajectory reaches the robot's low-level tracking controller, a three-stage safety gate screens it: it flags prompts that look statistically out-of-distribution using a Mahalanobis score, filters out unstable generations with a directional sensitivity discrepancy metric, and enforces hard joint and velocity limits. The team tested SafeFlow on Unitree's G1 humanoid, where it beat diffusion-based and retargeting-based baselines on success rate, physical compliance, and inference speed, while keeping motion variety and holding up across three different downstream tracking controllers.

The real problem this addresses is what the researchers call physical hallucination: text-to-motion models can generate movements that look plausible on screen but are impossible or dangerous to execute on real hardware, especially when a prompt is unusual or off-script. That is the same failure mode that plagues language models asked to answer outside their training distribution, just with more painful consequences when the output is a two-legged robot instead of a paragraph of text. Building the safety check as its own gating stage, rather than hoping the generator learns caution on its own, is a more honest way to handle that risk.

Still, one robot and one lab's benchmarks is a testbed, not a track record, and every text-driven demo eventually meets a request its filters never anticipated.","["robotics","humanoid robots","ai safety","motion generation"]","2026-09-16T04:00:00.000Z","2026-09-17T17:54:14.149Z","2026-09-17T17:54:26.103Z","published",null,[],"ai",[26,27,28,29],"robotics","humanoid robots","ai safety","motion generation",[31
arXiv cs.AI","https://arxiv.org/abs/2603.23983",0
37,41,46,51,56,60,64,69,74,78,83,88,93,98
"AI",3852,"2026-09-17T08:27:09.000Z
"Security","security",648,"2026-09-17T04:00:00.000Z
"Policy","policy",338,"2026-09-11T04:00:00.000Z
"Deals","deals",179,"2026-06-29T20:02:07.000Z
"Hardware","hardware",154
"Science","science",114
"Consumer Tech","consumer-tech",99,"2026-09-09T17:27:33.000Z
"Software","software",75,"2026-09-10T20:41:21.000Z
"Dev Tools","dev-tools",73
"Startups","startups",55,"2026-09-09T23:14:29.000Z
"Gaming","gaming",43,"2026-09-10T12:18:06.000Z
"General","general",41,"2026-09-08T01:57:23.000Z
"Reviews","reviews",20,"2026-06-24T12:00:01.000Z
"How-To","how-to",6,"2026-06-16T09:00:00.000Z"]
