This paper extends that idea to partitions built from symmetry groups acting on strings, essentially grouping strings into equivalence classes under some set of allowed rearrangements. When the group is the full symmetric group, meaning every possible rearrangement is allowed, this method recovers every known model of the string. Restrict the group to something narrower, like linear transformations over binary values (the group GL(n,2)), and the method only captures linearly homogeneous structure. The paper proves there exist strings with genuinely simple structure that this narrower, linear version cannot see at all.\n\nThat gap matters beyond pure math. Real pattern-detection and compression tools often restrict their search to a specific, computationally tractable family of symmetries, because checking every possible rearrangement is infeasible. This paper's maximal gap theorem shows that any such restricted, searchable family will provably miss some simple structure, no matter how it is tuned.\n\nIt is a theory paper with no benchmarks or code, so nothing changes in production systems today.
