Built to search digitized archives from the Bibliotheque nationale de France, TRACE was tested against 1,752 historical questions covering 1887 debates and newspapers, a benchmark called HistoriQA-ThirdRepublic. It scored a retrieval rate of 85.6 percent in the top 10 results and a mean reciprocal rank of 0.653, beating sparse, dense, graph-based, and other agent-based retrieval systems, with its biggest edge on questions that require pulling facts from multiple sources. It is currently in use by 24 researchers across six partner institutions.\n\nArchival search is a nastier problem than typical retrieval-augmented generation, since old newspapers and parliamentary records are OCR-riddled, inconsistently formatted, and demand airtight sourcing for anything a historian might cite. TRACE needs no retraining and no graph-building, and runs for about $0.02 per question, which matters for archives, libraries, and small labs that don't have GPU budgets to burn.\n\nStill, this is a research prototype used by two dozen people on one 19th-century French corpus, not a product.
