It runs on a parametric animal body model called SMAL+ and lets a person guide the reconstruction with simple prompts, like marking keypoints or rough masks, to tell the model which blob of fur belongs to which animal. To train it, the researchers also built Herd3D, a new dataset of more than 5,000 images spanning different species, interactions, and overlapping bodies. On three existing benchmarks, Animal3D, APTv2, and Animal Kingdom, it beat both older model-based approaches and newer model-free ones.\n\nMost 3D animal reconstruction research has stuck to single, cleanly isolated animals, which is not how animals actually show up in camera traps, nature documentaries, or herds.
