Cloudflare said that guessing is slow, burns tokens (the units AI models bill by), and can break when a store changes its theme. It launched an edge version of WebMCP in beta in August. Turned on, Cloudflare injects a small script at its network edge, so site owners write no code.\n\nThe default is the interesting part. Commerce.com enables WebMCP for its main zone, and a rule checks each merchant's metadata. If a merchant flips an opt-out switch in the dashboard, Cloudflare skips the script for that store. Cloudflare said opted-out stores get no extra latency and no injected code. Cloudflare also added a setting for custom paths, because Commerce.com's MCP server sits at \u002Fapi\u002Fmcp rather than the expected \u002Fmcp. If the server is down or the browser lacks WebMCP support, the script exits and the page loads as usual.\n\nThe agent works inside the shopper's own browser session, so the cart updates live. Checkout stays with the human, who clicks it personally. Commerce.com also runs a server-side MCP for agents that connect to stores directly. Both are described as the same set of shopping tools.\n\nThe risk is low, since the fallback means unsupported browsers see nothing. But the payoff is also limited for now. WebMCP sits behind Chrome flags, origin trials and a handful of agentic browsers, and the rollout described so far comes from the two companies themselves. A platform with this many storefronts turning it on by default could give the standard a large test audience before browsers commit to it.","[\"webmcp\",\"ai-agents\",\"e-commerce\",\"cloudflare\"]","2026-10-21T13:00:00.000Z","2026-10-21T13:05:45.751Z","2026-10-21T13:05:47.933Z","published",null,[],"dev-tools",[26,27,28,29],"webmcp","ai-agents","e-commerce","cloudflare",[31],{"name":32,"url":33},"Cloudflare Blog","https:\u002F\u002Fblog.cloudflare.com\u002Fwebmcp-commerce\u002F",0,{"sections":36},[37,42,47,52,57,61,66,71,76,81,84,89,94,99],{"name":38,"slug":39,"count":40,"latest_published_at":41},"AI","ai",7051,"2026-10-21T14:20:15.000Z",{"name":43,"slug":44,"count":45,"latest_published_at":46},"Security","security",1028,"2026-10-21T14:35:46.000Z",{"name":48,"slug":49,"count":50,"latest_published_at":51},"Policy","policy",560,"2026-10-21T13:46:18.000Z",{"name":53,"slug":54,"count":55,"latest_published_at":56},"Deals","deals",544,"2026-10-21T11:57:35.000Z",{"name":58,"slug":59,"count":60,"latest_published_at":18},"Hardware","hardware",279,{"name":62,"slug":63,"count":64,"latest_published_at":65},"Consumer Tech","consumer-tech",262,"2026-10-21T15:00:00.000Z",{"name":67,"slug":68,"count":69,"latest_published_at":70},"Science","science",211,"2026-10-21T09:00:00.000Z",{"name":72,"slug":73,"count":74,"latest_published_at":75},"Startups","startups",138,"2026-10-21T14:03:11.000Z",{"name":77,"slug":78,"count":79,"latest_published_at":80},"Software","software",134,"2026-10-20T14:57:15.000Z",{"name":82,"slug":24,"count":83,"latest_published_at":18},"Dev Tools",121,{"name":85,"slug":86,"count":87,"latest_published_at":88},"General","general",92,"2026-10-21T13:34:37.000Z",{"name":90,"slug":91,"count":92,"latest_published_at":93},"Gaming","gaming",84,"2026-10-21T02:56:30.000Z",{"name":95,"slug":96,"count":97,"latest_published_at":98},"Reviews","reviews",38,"2026-10-20T12:00:00.000Z",{"name":100,"slug":101,"count":102,"latest_published_at":103},"How-To","how-to",8,"2026-10-05T09:00:00.000Z"]
