A Reddit modder built a kit that replaces the RTX 5090's 16-pin power plug with four standard 8-pin connectors.
User DallasGrave showed off the quad 8-pin conversion kit, which sits above the card and uses a custom harness soldered to the board's power rails. Each 8-pin connector delivers up to 150W, so four together match the 16-pin's 600W ceiling. The kit tricks the card's sense pins into recognizing the full 600W. The creator claims testing up to 800W with a shunt mod, and says it can run alone or alongside the native connector as a load spreader.
The math explains the appeal. At 600W, the 16-pin connector pushes 50A through six power pins, each rated for 9.5A. That is about 8.33A per pin, uncomfortably close to the limit. Spread the same load over 12 pins and each carries roughly 4.17A, about half. Most 16-pin fixes are adapters that tidy up the plug. This one removes the bottleneck instead. The fact that it targets both the original 12VHPWR and the revised 12V-2x6 connector tells you owners still want a workaround.
There are caveats. 8-pin connectors can still fail, just less often, and the maker has not shared a release date, price or installation instructions. Soldering onto a card now listed at $8,500 is a brave hobby, and the safety claims remain one person's testing.
