Mistral just released a trillion-parameter model to argue Europe still belongs in the open-weight AI conversation.
The Paris-based company put out a preview of Mistral Large 4 today: a 1 trillion parameter model it's calling the most powerful open-weight AI system built outside China. Developers can use it right now through Mistral's API. The downloadable weights - the files needed to run the model on your own servers - are due later this month. That staggered rollout, API access first and self-hostable weights a few weeks later, is standard practice for frontier labs: ship the paid product immediately, let the free version catch up.
The real story is in Mistral's own framing. Calling this the best open-weight model "outside China" is a quiet admission that Chinese labs now set the pace for open AI, and that the best a Western lab can claim is second place. For developers and companies wary of routing data through a closed API - especially in Europe, where data-residency rules carry real weight - a credible non-Chinese open-weight option matters as much for politics as for performance.
A trillion parameters also means a trillion reasons you'll need serious hardware to run this at home. "Open" here means open to download, not open to anyone's laptop.
