Microsoft's own X account got hijacked long enough to push a Clippy-themed crypto meme to its massive following.
The @Microsoft account reposted a message from a crypto account built around Clippy, the old Office assistant turned internet in-joke. That repost reached the account's roughly 13 million followers. Microsoft has not said how the attacker got in, how long the post stayed live, or whether any other company accounts were affected.
A hijacked account with 13 million followers is free advertising for whatever token sits behind the meme. Even a brief window of visibility can be enough for a pump-and-dump coin to find buyers before anyone notices something is off. It is also a reminder that account security for a company this size still comes down to whoever controls a single login.
Clippy spent years annoying people inside Word. Now he is annoying them inside crypto Twitter instead.
