Microsoft just made an Xbox controller small enough to lose in a coat pocket.
The company unveiled the Xbox Nano controller today, a $49.99 pad just over five inches long, shorter than most phones. It keeps every standard Xbox button, plus Xbox Wireless and Bluetooth support, so it pairs with consoles, phones, tablets, and PCs. Microsoft says it is aimed at younger players, people with smaller hands, or anyone who wants something portable for gaming on the go. It also includes a rechargeable battery, according to the announcement.
This is Microsoft betting that portable play, think Game Pass streaming on a phone during a commute, or handing a controller to a kid, needs hardware built for the job, not just a smaller version of the same thing. At $49.99, it undercuts the premium Xbox Elite controllers by a wide margin while still working across the same Xbox, PC, and mobile ecosystem.
It is less a hardcore gaming accessory than an acknowledgment that most Xbox Cloud Gaming happens on a phone screen, not a television, and it puts Microsoft in the same compact-controller space Nintendo's Joy-Con and third-party makers like 8BitDo have occupied for years.
