Microsoft is about to lock down Office 2019 for Mac, disabling edit, save and new‑file functions on July 13.
The change follows the end of official support in 2023. After the deadline the program will still open existing documents, but the interface will grey out any editing controls. Users can keep files readable, but cannot modify them without either installing a newer Office version, switching to Office on the web, or using a third‑party editor that can handle the file formats.
The move forces lingering Mac users to confront a decade‑old software that no longer receives security updates. For small businesses and freelancers still on the old version, the cost of upgrading or the time spent re‑formatting files could be noticeable.
In short, Microsoft is nudging the last holdouts toward a newer subscription model, or else consigning their files to read‑only status.
