Microsoft says it's the first built-in magnetic USB-C port on a laptop, as opposed to third-party magnetic adapters that clip onto an existing port. Unlike Apple's MagSafe, which requires Apple's own connector, the Surface port accepts any regular USB-C cable. The catch is price: the Surface Laptop Ultra starts at $2,599.\n\nApple popularized the breakaway magnetic connector to stop laptops from getting yanked off desks, then locked it to a proprietary cable you can only use with a Mac. Microsoft's version keeps the breakaway convenience but works with the USB-C cables already in every drawer and backpack in the world. That's the more useful design, even if it's buried in Microsoft's priciest Surface yet.\n\nWhether that convenience is worth $2,599 is a separate question entirely.","[\"microsoft\",\"usb-c\",\"surface laptop ultra\",\"hardware\"]","2026-10-08T16:44:43.000Z","2026-10-09T13:12:25.799Z","2026-10-09T13:12:29.800Z","published",null,[],"hardware",[26,27,28,24],"microsoft","usb-c","surface laptop ultra",[30],{"name":31,"url":32},"Mashable","https:\u002F\u002Fmashable.com\u002Ftech\u002Fmicrosoft-surface-laptop-ultra-magnetic-usb-c-port",0,{"sections":35},[36,41,46,51,56,60,65,70,75,80,85,90,95,100],{"name":37,"slug":38,"count":39,"latest_published_at":40},"AI","ai",6534,"2026-10-08T20:04:26.000Z",{"name":42,"slug":43,"count":44,"latest_published_at":45},"Security","security",923,"2026-10-08T19:57:17.000Z",{"name":47,"slug":48,"count":49,"latest_published_at":50},"Policy","policy",481,"2026-10-08T19:45:00.000Z",{"name":52,"slug":53,"count":54,"latest_published_at":55},"Deals","deals",473,"2026-10-08T20:20:51.000Z",{"name":57,"slug":24,"count":58,"latest_published_at":59},"Hardware",228,"2026-10-08T20:31:56.000Z",{"name":61,"slug":62,"count":63,"latest_published_at":64},"Science","science",188,"2026-10-08T15:28:36.000Z",{"name":66,"slug":67,"count":68,"latest_published_at":69},"Consumer Tech","consumer-tech",180,"2026-10-08T18:21:59.000Z",{"name":71,"slug":72,"count":73,"latest_published_at":74},"Startups","startups",117,"2026-10-08T16:45:00.000Z",{"name":76,"slug":77,"count":78,"latest_published_at":79},"Software","software",114,"2026-10-08T17:57:01.000Z",{"name":81,"slug":82,"count":83,"latest_published_at":84},"Dev Tools","dev-tools",105,"2026-10-07T16:59:11.000Z",{"name":86,"slug":87,"count":88,"latest_published_at":89},"General","general",65,"2026-10-08T19:06:41.000Z",{"name":91,"slug":92,"count":93,"latest_published_at":94},"Gaming","gaming",58,"2026-10-08T20:08:45.000Z",{"name":96,"slug":97,"count":98,"latest_published_at":99},"Reviews","reviews",34,"2026-10-08T14:00:22.000Z",{"name":101,"slug":102,"count":103,"latest_published_at":104},"How-To","how-to",8,"2026-10-05T09:00:00.000Z"]
