Officials say the attackers were influenced by violent and extremist material they found online. The decree bars platforms from displaying or recommending content tied to hate speech, extremism, sexual exploitation, suicide, self-harm, eating disorders, and cyberbullying to minors, and it requires age verification and parental controls. Companies have 30 days to comply, or Sheinbaum says she will fast-track a follow-up law spelling out penalties for violators.\n\nThis is not Mexico's first move against screens this year - in September, Sheinbaum rolled out a bell-to-bell cellphone ban across public schools. The new decree also puts Mexico alongside Australia, which already bans social media outright for under-16s, while the United States still has only patchwork state and district rules and no federal law.\n\nMeta, TikTok, and Google reportedly sat in on briefings before the announcement, but none has commented publicly - for an industry that loves a press release, that silence says plenty.","[\"social media\",\"child safety\",\"mexico\",\"content moderation\"]","2026-10-14T20:42:53.000Z","2026-10-14T21:54:54.031Z","2026-10-14T21:55:00.153Z","published",null,[],"policy",[26,27,28,29],"social media","child safety","mexico","content moderation",[31],{"name":32,"url":33},"Mashable","https:\u002F\u002Fmashable.com\u002Ftech\u002Fmexico-social-media-violence-law",0,{"sections":36},[37,42,47,51,56,61,66,71,76,81,86,91,96,101],{"name":38,"slug":39,"count":40,"latest_published_at":41},"AI","ai",7012,"2026-10-14T22:53:31.000Z",{"name":43,"slug":44,"count":45,"latest_published_at":46},"Security","security",993,"2026-10-14T20:03:43.000Z",{"name":48,"slug":24,"count":49,"latest_published_at":50},"Policy",524,"2026-10-14T22:03:31.000Z",{"name":52,"slug":53,"count":54,"latest_published_at":55},"Deals","deals",513,"2026-10-14T17:24:42.000Z",{"name":57,"slug":58,"count":59,"latest_published_at":60},"Hardware","hardware",256,"2026-10-14T16:03:09.000Z",{"name":62,"slug":63,"count":64,"latest_published_at":65},"Consumer Tech","consumer-tech",226,"2026-10-14T22:00:02.000Z",{"name":67,"slug":68,"count":69,"latest_published_at":70},"Science","science",201,"2026-10-13T23:13:31.000Z",{"name":72,"slug":73,"count":74,"latest_published_at":75},"Startups","startups",133,"2026-10-14T19:51:34.000Z",{"name":77,"slug":78,"count":79,"latest_published_at":80},"Software","software",125,"2026-10-14T22:23:48.000Z",{"name":82,"slug":83,"count":84,"latest_published_at":85},"Dev Tools","dev-tools",116,"2026-10-13T16:20:18.000Z",{"name":87,"slug":88,"count":89,"latest_published_at":90},"General","general",79,"2026-10-14T18:09:38.000Z",{"name":92,"slug":93,"count":94,"latest_published_at":95},"Gaming","gaming",74,"2026-10-14T19:40:59.000Z",{"name":97,"slug":98,"count":99,"latest_published_at":100},"Reviews","reviews",37,"2026-10-14T10:00:00.000Z",{"name":102,"slug":103,"count":104,"latest_published_at":105},"How-To","how-to",8,"2026-10-05T09:00:00.000Z"]
