Meta's newest VR hardware doesn't strap to your head - it perches on your nose like sunglasses.
At Meta Connect 2026, Meta unveiled the Meta VR Glasses, a wearable that looks like a pair of hefty black sunglasses with blacked-out lenses. Instead of packing every component into one headset, Meta split the hardware: the glasses handle the immersive displays, while a separate computing puck that fits in your pocket does the heavy lifting. The goal is to deliver movies, games, and work apps in VR without the weight and bulk of a Vision Pro or Meta Quest. Reporters got a hands-on look at the device at the Connect event.
The bigger story here is the form factor bet. Headsets like the Quest and Vision Pro have struggled to move past niche, living-room use partly because strapping a computer to your face for hours is uncomfortable. By moving the processing off your head and into your pocket, Meta is wagering that comfort - not raw immersion - is what finally makes VR an everyday habit rather than an occasional novelty.
Whether hefty black sunglasses tethered to a pocket computer actually feel more wearable than a headset, or just uncomfortable in a new way, is a question no press release can answer. That's a verdict for a full hands-on review, not a launch.
