Meta just bought itself more room to train AI models, this time from a data center builder halfway around the world.
Meta has signed a deal to rent AI chip capacity at data centers in Southeast Asia operated by Firmus, an Australian company that builds and runs the facilities. Meta has reserved a set amount of capacity upfront, with the option to add more later. The company plans to use the rented chips for AI research, development, and training.
This is the compute land grab in miniature. Rather than wait years to build and power its own data centers, Meta is doing what Microsoft, Google, and OpenAI have all done recently: signing capacity deals with third-party operators to get chips online faster, and hedging its bets across regions and providers instead of betting everything on facilities it owns outright. Southeast Asia also offers something increasingly scarce in the US: available power and land.
The option-to-expand clause is the real story here. It tells you Meta doesn't know yet how much AI compute it will need, only that it wants the door open. That's the position most of the industry is in right now.
