Mercedes-Benz just told a British AI startup: your software is going in our next cars.
Wayve signed a definitive production agreement with Mercedes-Benz to put its AI Driver system into future production vehicles within the next two years. The software handles point-to-point driving assistance on both city streets and motorways. Mercedes already had skin in the game, having joined Wayve's $1.5 billion Series D funding round back in February. The integration runs through MB.OS, Mercedes' in-house software architecture, rather than as a bolt-on system.
This is the difference between a startup collecting venture money and a startup collecting a customer. Wayve has spent years positioning itself as a software supplier to automakers rather than a robotaxi operator, and landing a production slot at a brand as image-conscious as Mercedes is the clearest signal yet that the bet is paying off.
Call it what it is: a driver-assistance system with a friendlier name, not the driverless car that marketing will eventually imply.
