A trailer for the Mass Effect game EA just canceled has appeared on Reddit, a day after the publisher shut down BioWare, the studio behind the series.
The video opens with a message saying it contains "in-engine footage" and "pre-production assets." In plain terms, that means it was captured inside the game's own software using early, unfinished art, not a polished cinematic built for marketing. That label comes from the video itself, and it is unclear who posted it or how it got out. Nothing in the clip independently confirms it represents the canceled project.
The footage centers on an ex-soldier in conversation with a mysterious Asari, one of the series' alien species, who sidles up to him at a bar. A flashback then cuts to a fight that looks like a modern-day version of the combat from the original trilogy. Humans and other alien species mingle throughout, with brief action sequences between the quieter scenes.
The choice of material is the interesting part. A bar conversation with a stranger, a trace of military backstory and a nod to the first three games' combat is a familiar opening for this franchise. It suggests the team was building toward the tone of the original trilogy, not a break from it.
Pre-production footage says little about how a finished game would have played, though, and early builds often look nothing like the final product. The larger question is what happens to the work now that the studio that made it is gone.
