MapQuest has added public transit directions, letting users pull up bus and train routes next to its usual driving and walking options. The update landed in 2026, three decades after the service first launched. The company hasn't detailed which cities or transit agencies are covered at launch, so coverage may be spotty at first.
That gap matters because transit routing is table stakes for modern mapping apps - Google Maps and dedicated apps like Citymapper have offered it for years. MapQuest's slow rollout underscores how far the service has fallen behind the tools most commuters already use every day. It reads less like modernization and more like an admission of how long the app coasted on old habits.
Better late than never, though it raises the obvious question of what took so long.
