It was tested with 24GB of memory. In Furmark, a graphics stress test, it scored 3,508 points at 1024 x 768. The current Steam Deck scores 3,323, though at 1280 x 800, so the two numbers are not a like-for-like comparison.

The Valve link is a naming pattern. Valve's earlier Steam Deck chips carried Final Fantasy VII codenames, Aerith and Sephiroth, and Gainsborough is Aerith's surname, as the leaker Kepler pointed out. That is a hint, not a confirmation.

The benchmark itself says little. Early silicon runs on immature drivers, so a narrow lead over a years-old chip is roughly what you would expect at this stage. The 24GB figure is just AMD's or Valve's test setup, and with memory prices under strain it is a poor guide to a retail configuration.

Timing is the bigger problem. The chip is expected to debut in late 2027 or 2028, which looks early for a Steam Deck sequel when memory costs make a low price harder to hit. Valve engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais was also guarded the last time he discussed the Steam Deck 2, and the hardware sounded unsettled. Still, a late-decade launch built on this chip would fit the dates.

The more useful question is what Valve wants from a sequel. Some gamers already call this chip's early numbers underwhelming for a generational jump. A handheld that sells on price and battery life may not need a big benchmark leap, but Valve has not said which of those it is chasing.","["steam-deck","valve","amd","handheld"]","2026-10-20T13:24:49.000Z","2026-10-20T14:36:00.898Z","2026-10-20T14:36:03.093Z","published",null,[],"gaming",[26,27,28,29],"steam-deck","valve","amd","handheld",[31
TechRadar","https://www.techradar.com/gaming/steam-deck/is-valve-now-working-on-the-steam-deck-2-rumors-suggest-leaked-amd-chip-could-be-the-engine-of-the-next-gen-handheld",0
37,42,47,52,57,62,67,72,77,82,87,92,95,99
"AI","ai",7042,"2026-10-20T16:00:00.000Z
"Security","security",1015,"2026-10-20T12:00:00.000Z
"Policy","policy",546,"2026-10-20T13:11:23.000Z
"Deals","deals",536,"2026-10-20T15:55:20.000Z
"Hardware","hardware",271,"2026-10-20T15:25:03.000Z
"Consumer Tech","consumer-tech",252,"2026-10-20T16:04:13.000Z
"Science","science",207,"2026-10-20T12:50:00.000Z
"Startups","startups",135,"2026-10-20T11:00:00.000Z
"Software","software",134,"2026-10-20T14:57:15.000Z
"Dev Tools","dev-tools",119,"2026-10-20T13:00:00.000Z
"General","general",88,"2026-10-20T09:36:16.000Z
"Gaming",80
"Reviews","reviews",38
"How-To","how-to",8,"2026-10-05T09:00:00.000Z"]
