Amazon has renamed Kindle Unlimited to Kindle Plus, and the subscription's audiobook access now extends to books read by AI narrators.
The service still costs $11.99 per month. It still offers unlimited access to a select collection of ebooks, comics, and magazines from the Kindle catalog. Thousands of those titles also come with a companion audiobook, so you can switch between reading and listening and pick up where you left off.
What changes is the audiobook side. According to ZDNet, Kindle Plus will add "virtual voice" audiobooks, which are read by AI narrators rather than human performers, to the access it already offers.
The rename follows a pattern. Subscription services keep adding a "+" to their names, and Amazon is the latest to do it. The old name was also a slightly awkward fit: "Unlimited" described how much you could read, while the catalog itself was only ever a selection. "Plus" promises less on that point and more on the add-ons, which is where the audiobook change lands.
The AI narration is the part worth watching. The material so far does not say how many virtual voice titles will be included, whether they will be labeled clearly, or how they will sit alongside the human-narrated companion audiobooks. Those details will decide whether this is a modest perk or a real shift in what a Kindle subscription is.
