Amazon also cut off software support in May for Kindles from 2012 or earlier, effectively forcing anyone still on original hardware to upgrade.\n\nE-reader shopping used to come down to Kindle versus Kobo, with price differences of a few dollars. After two Amazon price hikes this year, Boox's $109.99 Picco undercuts the basic Kindle by $40. Boox's open Android system also lets one device run the Kindle, Kobo, and library-lending apps side by side, something Amazon's closed hardware doesn't allow.
