A federal judge has blocked the Pentagon's attempt to blacklist Anthropic.
The Department of Defense had designated Anthropic a national security supply-chain risk, a label that would have restricted the company's ability to work with the department. A federal judge rejected that designation outright, calling it "illegal and baseless." The ruling stops the blacklist from taking effect. It also leaves the Pentagon's original reasoning without much cover, since a court has now said, on the record, that it did not hold up.
Defense work has become a prize for AI labs looking to prove their models belong in sensitive, high-stakes settings, and a supply-chain risk label is the kind of thing that follows a company into every other government bid. Blocking the designation removes that shadow from Anthropic for now, right as it and its rivals compete for the same national security business.
Calling a federal agency's own justification "baseless" is a pointed rebuke, not a technicality. If the Pentagon wants to keep companies out of its supply chain, this ruling suggests it needs a case that survives a judge's actual scrutiny.
