It is optional. On calls in apps like FaceTime, Edge Light lights up the borders of the screen so your face is evenly illuminated in low light. In practice, it is a virtual ring light, the kind of lamp people clip to a desk or stand behind a camera.\n\nThe idea is not new for phones, which have long used a bright screen as a stand-in for a selfie flash. What is new is the tool's origin. Edge Light started on the Mac, and its arrival on the Duo shows Apple moving a software feature from one product line to another rather than building something separate.\n\nThat is a modest move, and it suits the problem. Video calls usually happen indoors, often in dim rooms, and the screen you are looking at is already pointed at your face.\n\nSome details are unclear: how bright the effect gets, and which apps beyond FaceTime-style calling can use it. Those answers will decide whether Edge Light is a real fix for bad lighting or a small convenience.","[\"iphone-duo\",\"apple\",\"edge-light\",\"video-calls\"]","2026-10-21T17:57:33.000Z","2026-10-21T18:15:22.398Z","2026-10-21T18:15:22.611Z","published",null,[24,30],{"id":25,"reviewer":26,"round":27,"reason":28,"status":29},"editor-r1","editor",1,"Cut the unsupported assertions the source doesn't back: that the iPhone Duo has an outer screen and a 'large' inner display, that Edge Light 'was built for a laptop screen,' and that reusing it is 'cheaper than inventing a new one.'
