IDScan.net is being sued by consumers after data tied to 153 million driver's licenses surfaced on the dark web.
The license records appeared for sale on a marketplace called Nexus. They were allegedly stolen from IDScan.net, a company that businesses use to verify driver's licenses and other identity documents. Consumers who believe their information was part of the exposed data have now filed multiple lawsuits against the company.
IDScan.net's entire business model depends on being trusted with exactly the kind of data that just leaked - names, addresses, license numbers, the works. A breach at an identity-verification vendor is worse than a breach at a random retailer, because the whole point of the service is to prove people are who they say they are.
