HUMXN Will Fix Your Plumbing Free If Robots Can Watch

HUMXN will cover home repairs in Minneapolis, Chicago, and Miami in exchange for recording the work, a paid alternative to scraping data.

An AI lab called HUMXN will pay for home repairs in Minneapolis, Chicago, and Miami, provided it can record the work being done.

The subsidy covers plumbing, electrical, HVAC, air-duct cleaning, and carpet cleaning. Homeowners who qualify get the service free if they let someone in with "wearable capture technology" to work inside the house. Service professionals still get paid, the company said. Residents can check eligibility on the HUMXN Free Home Service webpage.

The company wants to see more than hands on pipes. It said the footage would show how a technician examines a situation, tests systems, picks tools, reacts to changing conditions, and decides whether the job is done. Capturing natural movement in a lab is hard, HUMXN said, so it is going into "different homes, equipment types, problems, technicians, and environments." The three cities were chosen for their very different climates.

The pitch is a barter. The homeowner gets a repair, the technician gets paid, and the robotics industry gets training material. Founder Thomas Unise framed it as a way for workers and homeowners to "participate in the economics" of their expertise.

The contrast with the last round of AI training is plain. Meta, Nvidia, and OpenAI have all been accused of taking data without permission. Text and images were sitting on the open web, so scraping was easy. Skilled trade work mostly is not online in a form a model can learn from, which Unise acknowledged when he said very little of that expertise exists in a usable format. A lab that wants it has to go out and make it, and that tends to mean asking and paying.

HUMXN has not said how the footage will be licensed or who will buy it. It also has not said whether technicians receive anything beyond their normal pay, or how it handles everything else a camera sees inside a private home.
