The comments came alongside a new roadmap for the Ascend 960, 970, and 980 NPUs, which promise sizable inference gains over the current 910C and 950-series chips. Huawei also detailed Atlas SuperPoD clusters that scale up to 15,488 Ascend 960 chips using optical networking, claiming up to 120 FP4 EFLOPS of performance.\n\nChip for chip, Huawei is still years behind. Its 2027 Ascend 960DT tops out at 2 FP8 PFLOPS for training, about half of what Nvidia's 2023 H200 already delivers, and its 2029 Ascend 980 still falls short of Nvidia's upcoming R200.
