It's a better way of describing what the assistant can actually do.\n\nResearchers built a benchmark of 9,822 single-turn requests covering 79 vehicle functions pulled from Android Automotive, then tested four small language models, from 270 million to 1.7 billion parameters, on two ways of presenting those functions to the model. One method, called Functional Tokens, bakes each function into the model during training as a compact token. The other, Schema-in-Prompt, lists the available functions directly in the prompt at inference time. On functions the models had already seen in training, a 270M model matched the 1.7B model, and the strongest overall results came from a mid-sized 0.6B model.\n\nThe real split showed up on functions the models never trained on, and on requests that should be refused outright. Functional Tokens scored zero on unseen functions, by construction, and could still confidently invoke a function that doesn't exist.
