A Ukrainian drone that started as covert photographs of a Chinese factory floor took down a Russian strategic bomber last month.
The MICH 2000, built for the SBU's Alpha special operations unit, destroyed a Tu-95MS bomber at Russia's Engels-2 air base, according to a factory report cited by defense outlet Oboronka. It's a reverse-engineered copy of China's ZTK-150, a flying-wing drone Beijing refused to sell after Ukrainian units had been converting civilian airframes like the Mugin-5 PRO into deep-strike weapons. When a 2023 factory visit to buy the manufacturing technology fell through, the Ukrainian team accepted pilot training instead and quietly photographed the production line, then flew home with eight drones to copy. Two years and dozens of domestic suppliers later, the $48,000 MICH 2000 carries a 60 kg warhead 2,000 km, and the manufacturer now builds about 6,000 a year.
The bigger story is what this says about export controls as a defense strategy. Beijing tried to keep this exact capability out of Ukrainian hands, and it took Ukraine roughly two years to functionally rebuild it anyway, at a lower price than the original. That's a rough timeline for how long a hardware ban buys against a motivated, well-funded reverse-engineering effort, and the same dynamic is now playing out with jam-resistant navigation antennas, which still push Ukraine back toward a handful of foreign suppliers.
Fire Point's FP-1, which struck a refinery 2,500 km inside Russia, is aiming for 100,000 drones a year versus the MICH 2000's 6,000, though the FP-1 serves many units while the MICH 2000 has exactly one customer, the SBU.
