Rowhammer works by repeatedly hammering rows of memory cells until bit flips leak into neighboring rows, corrupting data or handing attackers a way in. Last year Nvidia told worried GPU owners to just turn on ECC. GPUThor is, according to the researchers, the first Rowhammer attack shown to defeat that protection on Nvidia hardware, working against four Ampere-generation workstation cards.\n\nECC was supposed to be the simple fix, the thing you flip on and stop worrying about.
