Google is letting some Indian shoppers buy products from Flipkart without leaving Gemini or AI Mode.
The company has begun a limited test that lets users complete purchases from Walmart-owned Flipkart directly through its AI chat tools in India. The pilot only covers select products and a small group of users for now. Google plans to expand the feature more broadly in October. Neither company has detailed which product categories are included or how checkout and payment are handled inside the chat interface.
This is Google pushing its AI assistants past answering questions and into completing transactions, the harder problem every AI company is chasing. If Gemini can close a sale, it could pull in commerce revenue and purchasing data that currently flows to Amazon and Flipkart's own shopping apps - a meaningful shift in India, one of the largest and fastest-growing e-commerce markets.
It is a small pilot dressed up as a big idea; plenty of AI shopping-assistant launches have stalled at the demo stage, and actual checkout volume will tell the real story.
