Google Photos now lets you blur out sensitive details in a photo with one tap, no third-party app required.
The new tool, called Redact, is part of a wider rollout of AI-powered editing features in Google Photos. It works like a targeted blur, letting someone select and obscure a specific part of an image, such as a name, address, or account number, without touching the rest of the photo. Google is folding it in alongside other AI editing tools already in the app, treating in-app redaction as a natural companion to features like Magic Eraser, which already lets users remove unwanted objects from a shot.
Screenshots leak more personal information than most people notice — boarding passes, delivery confirmations, chat threads — often shared fast without a second look at what else is visible in the frame. Building redaction directly into Google Photos removes the friction that normally pushes people to skip that step, or to reach for a separate app that comes with its own privacy tradeoffs.
It is a small feature next to a big AI update, but it is the kind of guardrail that matters more than another flashy generative demo.
