Google wants you to build your own games.
The company unveiled Playground on October 7 as an experimental platform for creating, playing, and sharing custom games. Google's announcement is short on specifics - no word yet on what creation tools are included, what runs the games, or whether creators can make money from them. The pitch, as Google frames it, boils down to three verbs: create, play, share.
That puts Google in territory Roblox and itch.io have worked for years, arriving late rather than leading. It also raises the obvious question: will Playground stick around? Google has a long history of launching "experimental" products - Stadia among them - and then quietly shutting them down once the novelty fades.
Try it if you're curious. Just don't get too attached.
