Google Folds Gemini Into One Agent for Work Tasks

Google's new Gemini agent works across Gmail, Slack, and Microsoft 365, betting one assistant beats juggling a dozen chat windows.

Google wants one Gemini to run your whole workday, not just your inbox.

The company unveiled a 'universal' Gemini agent at its Gemini at Work event on Thursday. It lives inside the new Gemini Enterprise app, where employees can chat with it and hand off tasks from a single screen. The agent also works directly inside Gmail, Drive, Docs, Sheets, and Calendar, and reaches outside Google's own apps into Slack and Microsoft 365. Because it runs in the cloud rather than on a device, Google says it keeps the same context whether you open it on your phone, your laptop, or the web.

This is Google's clearest shot yet at the enterprise-agent fight that Microsoft's Copilot and Salesforce's Agentforce have been racing to define: whoever owns the agent that touches every app effectively owns the workday. It also quietly expands what Gemini knows about you - a single assistant with memory across email, documents, and third-party chat is a much bigger data footprint than a chatbot confined to one tab.

Google has promised a do-everything assistant before, and Google Assistant's slow fade is a reminder that "universal" and "sticky" aren't the same thing.
