Google lets Ask Gemini read your Gmail messages when you invoke it from Drive.
The feature rolls out today and works the same way existing Drive content does: you type a prompt, and Gemini can pull text from selected Gmail threads, combine it with files in Drive, and return a single answer, summary, or analysis. The integration is optional; users must explicitly add a Gmail thread as a source. It appears in the same side‑panel UI that already lists Drive documents.
The change matters because it blurs the line between email and file storage for AI assistance. Teams can now ask a single question that references both a contract saved in Drive and a recent email exchange, saving a manual copy‑paste step. It also raises the bar for Google’s internal competition with other AI‑augmented office suites that already mix email and documents.
Expect privacy prompts to become more frequent as the model reaches into personal mail, and keep an eye on how the feature is rolled out across enterprise accounts.
