The study spanned six experimental factors, two Africa-centric corpora, and four large ASR models, making it one of the more systematic evaluations of this specific strategy. The findings were consistent: pre-adaptation on related languages produced no practically meaningful improvement when the target language had minimal training data. The result holds across all tested conditions.\n\nThe implication is pointed. Cross-lingual transfer via linguistic relatedness has shown real promise in smaller ASR models, and the assumption has been that scaling up would at least preserve those gains. This study suggests the opposite — that size may actually reduce how much shared linguistic ancestry matters, which complicates a popular low-cost strategy for extending speech AI to underserved language communities in Africa and likely elsewhere.\n\nFor now, the search for a practical path to low-resource ASR continues.
