Mixture-of-Experts models are increasingly used for this because they activate only a slice of their parameters per request, cutting compute and communication costs. The catch is that when client data varies wildly, averaging every client's updates together can actively hurt performance, a problem researchers call negative transfer. A new framework called ClientMorpher addresses this by reading each client's expert-activation patterns, the routing signature that shows which internal experts get used, and clustering clients with similar signatures before combining their updates. The method was tested on the Dolly-15K instruction dataset using two clustering strategies, one grouping clients directly and one grouping the experts first.\n\nRouting behavior turns out to be a signal federated systems already generate for free, and using it to decide who trains with whom beats plain averaging without adding any extra data transfer.
