Europe is buying its sixth AI supercomputer in a row, and this one comes from a vendor Europe itself now owns.
LUMI-AI, a 387.8 million euro (about $449 million) system, is headed to Kajaani in northern Finland. It will be built by Bull, the French supercomputer maker that the French state acquired outright five months ago. The order is the sixth AI Factory procurement contract signed so far. Kajaani already hosts LUMI, one of Europe's existing high-performance computing sites, making it a logical spot to bolt on dedicated AI capacity.
The timing is the real story here. Buying AI infrastructure from a company the state just nationalized blurs the line between industrial policy and technology procurement. Europe has spent years worried about depending on US and Chinese chipmakers and cloud providers; owning the supplier is one way to guarantee a captive customer, but it also means taxpayers are on both ends of the transaction.
Six AI Factory contracts in, the EuroHPC program looks less like a one-off response to the AI boom and more like a standing pipeline for national compute champions - Bull chief among them for now.
