The European Union has proposed a sustainability labeling system for data centers, requiring operators to disclose how much energy and water their facilities use. The move is a precursor step: the EU plans to follow the disclosure rules with minimum performance standards for data center efficiency. No timeline, label design, or enforcement mechanism has been detailed yet.
This is the EU's familiar regulatory sequence - measure first, then mandate. It is the same approach used for appliance energy ratings and vehicle emissions, and it puts data centers, the physical infrastructure behind every AI chatbot and cloud service, under the kind of scrutiny previously reserved for washing machines. With AI workloads driving a surge in data center construction and power demand, the timing is not a coincidence.
Expect the label itself to be the easy part. The performance standards that follow it are where operators, especially those running older facilities, will feel the pressure.
