Data centers across Europe are about to get report cards.
The European Commission proposed the rating scheme on Monday. It covers any individual site that draws more than 500 kW, a threshold low enough to catch most commercial data centers, not just the hyperscale giants. The score won't just tally how much energy and water a facility consumes - it also credits what the site puts back, such as recovered heat that gets reused elsewhere. Data centers are one of the fastest-growing sources of power demand in Europe, and AI workloads are pushing that higher still. A public rating turns efficiency from a private cost line into something regulators, customers, and neighbors can actually compare. That kind of transparency is what pushed automakers to compete on fuel economy - expect cloud providers to start citing their grades the same way.
Whether a letter grade changes how a hyperscaler actually builds a data center, or just gives its PR team a new number to cite, is the open question.
