Sellers of instructions must show a real example made using them, and an AI image of what a project could theoretically look like no longer counts. For most listings, sellers must include at least one completely unedited photo of the actual product against a real background. Digital, customized, and made-to-order items have different requirements. Additional photos can still be edited with software or AI tools, as long as they accurately show what the buyer will receive.

The penalties give the rule its teeth. If a seller's images do not meet the requirements and a buyer opens a case because the product looks materially different, the seller could be responsible for a refund. Bot-generated listings with no human involvement will be removed, and the seller's shop could be removed too.

AI art itself stays legal. Etsy's July 2024 policy allowed artwork made from a seller's own original prompts if the listing disclosed the AI use, while barring prompt bundles sold apart from finished work. The new rules push that same line out to functional guides, where a fake result misleads a buyer more directly than a fake painting does.

The motive looks practical. James Ossman, Etsy's vice president of customer operations, wrote that many active buyers cannot tell which items involve AI-generated content, and that this is a top-three barrier to shopping more often. The company gave no figures for that claim, but buyer comments in a Reddit thread point the same way. One user said they stopped buying bath bomb molds from a shop after real photos gave way to generated ones, because they could no longer judge the mold's details.

Enforcement is the open question. Etsy said it is investing in technology to find misleading images and fraudulent listings, and plans to expand removals over the coming months. It will also prompt sellers when an upload appears AI-generated and let shoppers report misleading imagery. Because edited photos remain allowed, those tools will have to tell a retouched picture from a fabricated one, and the rules lean heavily on that distinction.","["etsy","ai-generated-content","marketplaces","policy"]","2026-10-23T18:46:30.000Z","2026-10-23T18:59:55.552Z","2026-10-23T18:59:55.794Z","published",null,[],"general",[26,27,28,29],"etsy","ai-generated-content","marketplaces","policy",[31
Mashable","https://mashable.com/tech/etsy-ai-rules-generated-images-recipes-patterns",0
37,42,47,51,56,61,66,71,76,81,86,89,94,99
"AI","ai",7075,"2026-10-23T19:32:39.000Z
"Security","security",1063,"2026-10-23T19:41:05.000Z
"Policy",581,"2026-10-23T16:58:39.000Z
"Deals","deals",569,"2026-10-23T14:43:38.000Z
"Hardware","hardware",294,"2026-10-23T20:00:00.000Z
"Consumer Tech","consumer-tech",293,"2026-10-23T18:42:54.000Z
"Science","science",217,"2026-10-23T16:13:16.000Z
"Startups","startups",148,"2026-10-23T16:26:29.000Z
"Software","software",143,"2026-10-23T19:28:10.000Z
"Dev Tools","dev-tools",122,"2026-10-21T16:00:00.000Z
"General",101
"Gaming","gaming",88,"2026-10-22T22:25:33.000Z
"Reviews","reviews",38,"2026-10-20T12:00:00.000Z
"How-To","how-to",8,"2026-10-05T09:00:00.000Z"]
