Estonia has handed free ChatGPT accounts to nearly 20,000 secondary‑school students.
The rollout, called the AI Classroom pilot, began on June 5 2026. The Education Ministry said access is provided via each school's existing learning‑management system, using school‑issued passwords. Participation is limited to students in grades 7‑12 and will run for the 2026‑27 academic year.
Officials hope the experiment will show how generative AI can support learning without the need for a blanket ban. The data will feed into policy decisions on curriculum integration and safeguards against misuse.
If the trial shows measurable benefits, Estonia may expand the program beyond its current pilot schools.
