Donut Lab is still testing, not shipping, its solid-state battery.
The startup turned heads at CES with claims about a commercially viable solid-state battery, a technology that promises more energy density and better safety than today's lithium-ion cells. Months later, the company is still running tests rather than shipping hardware. Solid-state batteries remain in the prototype and testing phase, with production yet to materialize.
Solid-state battery promises are common across the EV and consumer electronics industries, and plenty of well-funded companies have struggled to move from lab demo to factory floor. Donut Lab's CES buzz followed that familiar script: the splash came first, and the manufacturing reality is still an open question.
Until cells roll off a production line, "commercially viable" is a claim worth filing under marketing, not news.
