DJI Says Osmo Pocket 4P Hits 17 Stops of Dynamic Range

DJI's dual-lens Pocket 4P adds a 60mm second camera and a new log profile, but ships with less protection than the single-lens Pocket 4.

DJI's Osmo Pocket 4P adds a second, 60mm-equivalent lens to the Pocket 4 formula, and a new log profile that DJI says stretches dynamic range to 17 stops.

The 4P is one of two follow-ups to the Osmo Pocket 3. The Pocket 4 keeps a single 20mm-equivalent wide lens on a one-inch sensor. The 4P pairs an upgraded one-inch wide sensor with a 60mm mid-tele lens on a 1/1.28-inch sensor, stacked vertically. That gives it lossless zoom and more background compression. Its wide lens also focuses as close as 9 cm, against 20 cm on the Pocket 4.

On paper, the main camera is where the two models converge. Both top out at 4K 60fps video, 4K 240fps slow motion and 37 MP stills. The 4P has a faster shutter and wider ISO ranges, which should help in low light. Both shoot 10-bit D-Log, but only the 4P adds D-Log 2. The original profile offered 14 stops of dynamic range, and the 17-stop figure for the new one is DJI's own number.

The tradeoffs are on the hardware side. The 4P has no hard cover and no gimbal clamp, only a fabric pouch, and it rejects the protective options from the Pocket 3 and 4. Its lenses also face outward when off, because the extra bulk rules out the tuck-away trick on DJI's single-lens models. Third-party cases already exist, but they are an extra cost. The review also notes the 4P has launched globally but is still not coming to the U.S.

The bundled Osmo FrameTap remote shows DJI's priorities. It reaches 82 feet, though DJI advises staying under 32. It is smaller than the Insta360 Luna Ultra's remote and cannot reach the 4P's two new buttons. That makes it a weaker tool for solo shooters. It is also replaceable, though, while the Luna Ultra's remote is the camera's own controls detached and cannot be replaced.

The picture is a split decision. The 4P's real gains are the second lens, close focus and log range. Anyone who needs none of those has little reason to look past the Pocket 4.
