According to [the deal write-up this piece draws on](https://mashable.com/tech/oct-21-dji-neo-mini-drone-deal), it weighs 135 grams, shoots stabilized 4K video and has full propeller guards. It takes off from an open hand at the press of a button, and it can follow a person automatically while they walk, run or hike. Control options include palm gestures, voice commands or a phone pairing. None of that comes from our own testing, and the write-up reads like deal copy, so treat the superlatives accordingly.

The weight is the detail that matters most. The FAA's registration threshold for drones is 250 grams, and the Neo sits well under it. The write-up says that means casual flyers can skip FAA registration and Remote ID, the broadcast signal larger drones must transmit. It also says there is no test to take. That last part deserves a check: US recreational flyers are generally still expected to pass the FAA's free safety quiz, whatever the aircraft weighs. Lighter means less paperwork, not none.

The pitch is a camera that needs no controller skills, which explains the price focus. At $169 the Neo costs less than many mid-range phones, and it targets people who want a follow-me camera more than they want a hobby. Whether the tracking holds up on a busy trail is the question the discount cannot answer.","["dji","drones","consumer-tech","deals"]","2026-10-21T22:00:00.000Z","2026-10-21T23:20:12.662Z","2026-11-08T00:22:37.757Z","published","The draft still never names Mashable in the text (it says 'the deal write-up this piece draws on' and 'deal coverage' in the dek), so name Mashable explicitly as the source of the weight, FAA/Remote ID and feature claims, keep them marked untested, and confirm the linked URL is real because the source material provides no URL.",[24,30,35,39
"editor-r1","editor",1,"The price math reconciles ($199 to $169 is $30, about 15%), but the article repeatedly attributes claims to 'the listing' and 'the retailer's pitch' when the only source is Mashable's deal write-up, so reattribute the weight, FAA/Remote ID and feature claims to Mashable (or drop them) and say they are untested.","resolved
"editor-r2",2,"The draft still never names Mashable and only says 'the deal write-up' or 'the write-up', which is unidentified outside material, so name Mashable as the source of the weight, FAA/Remote ID and feature claims (keeping them marked untested) and state the FAA threshold the weight claim relies on.","open
"editor-r3",3,"The draft now attributes the claims to 'the deal coverage' and marks them untested, and it states the 250-gram FAA threshold, but it still never names Mashable, so 'the coverage' remains unidentified outside material; name Mashable as the source of the weight, FAA/Remote ID and feature claims, ideally with a link.
"editor-r4",4,null,"deals",[45,46,47,43],"dji","drones","consumer-tech",[49
Mashable","https://mashable.com/tech/oct-21-dji-neo-mini-drone-deal",0
55,60,65,69,74,78,83,88,93,98,103,108,113,118
"AI","ai",7110,"2026-11-08T14:34:09.000Z
"Security","security",1099,"2026-11-08T15:24:01.000Z
"Deals",620,"2026-11-08T08:00:00.000Z
"Policy","policy",604,"2026-11-07T15:48:26.000Z
"Consumer Tech",336,"2026-11-08T21:00:00.000Z
"Hardware","hardware",316,"2026-11-08T14:36:39.000Z
"Science","science",222,"2026-11-07T16:19:17.000Z
"Software","software",154,"2026-11-08T15:42:52.000Z
"Startups","startups",150,"2026-11-06T16:50:01.000Z
"Dev Tools","dev-tools",125,"2026-11-06T22:15:59.000Z
"General","general",111,"2026-11-08T21:27:29.000Z
"Gaming","gaming",94,"2026-11-08T20:52:05.000Z
"Reviews","reviews",38,"2026-10-20T12:00:00.000Z
"How-To","how-to",8,"2026-10-05T09:00:00.000Z"]
