The usual snag with this kind of teaching is that teacher and student often use different tokenizers, the systems that split text into chunks, so their outputs don't line up piece for piece. SimpleOPD works around that by aligning only the tokens that cover identical spans of text under both tokenizers, and it adds a penalty that keeps the student's answers from drifting too far from its own starting behavior, which stops training from spiraling into long, truncated responses. The team tested it by transferring proof-writing skills into five student models, including Qwen3, Qwen3.5, Intern-S2, GLM-4.7 and Gemma-4, and saw consistent gains in math reasoning.

The standout number: Intern-S2-Preview gained 21.2 points on ProofBench, a benchmark for writing math proofs, reaching a score of 55.2 and edging past Gemini-2.5-Pro on that test. The improvements also carried over to general science benchmarks, HLE and HiPhO, which is the more interesting claim here: it suggests the technique is teaching transferable reasoning, not just proof-writing tricks.

One benchmark win over one rival model on one narrow test is not proof of a new pecking order, and distillation papers have a habit of looking better in the abstract than in the wild. Still, a cheap fix for tokenizer mismatch between AI models is a genuinely useful plumbing problem to solve, regardless of the benchmark bragging rights.","["ai","distillation","reasoning-models","research"]","2026-08-17T04:00:00.000Z","2026-08-17T08:26:48.509Z","2026-08-17T08:27:00.341Z","published",null,[],"ai",[24,26,27,28],"distillation","reasoning-models","research",[30
arXiv cs.AI","https://arxiv.org/abs/2608.14277",0
36,40,44,49,54,59,64,69,74,79,84,89,94,99
"AI",3293,"2026-08-20T04:00:00.000Z
"Security","security",435
"Policy","policy",210,"2026-08-19T09:32:27.000Z
"Deals","deals",179,"2026-06-29T20:02:07.000Z
"Hardware","hardware",140,"2026-08-19T18:25:42.000Z
"Consumer Tech","consumer-tech",95,"2026-08-18T16:05:00.000Z
"Science","science",90,"2026-08-19T18:41:02.000Z
"Software","software",73,"2026-08-18T07:51:50.000Z
"Dev Tools","dev-tools",69,"2026-08-18T04:00:00.000Z
"Startups","startups",47,"2026-08-19T19:13:46.000Z
"Gaming","gaming",41,"2026-07-09T04:00:00.000Z
"General","general",33,"2026-08-18T22:18:13.000Z
"Reviews","reviews",20,"2026-06-24T12:00:01.000Z
"How-To","how-to",6,"2026-06-16T09:00:00.000Z"]
