Disney just hired the CEO it once threatened to sue.
Disney has appointed Karandeep Anand, who led Character.AI, to a newly created position: chief technology officer for the entire company. The move comes about a year after Disney sent Character.AI a cease-and-desist letter in September 2025, accusing the chatbot platform of letting users generate content with its copyrighted characters without permission. Two months after that letter, Character.AI barred users under 18 from its open-ended chat features. Anand now moves from running a company Disney was legally pressuring into overseeing technology strategy across Disney's parks, studios, and streaming businesses.
Hiring the person who ran the company on the other side of a cease-and-desist says something about how Disney actually views AI chatbots: less a threat to police and more expertise worth buying. It also signals Disney wants to build its own generative-AI capabilities rather than just defend against outside ones, at a moment when entertainment companies are racing to figure out where AI fits in their business.
Character.AI, meanwhile, is left explaining a CEO departure just as it's still working through the fallout from age-restriction policies and content disputes with brands like Disney's.
