Collibra just bought itself an AI compliance watchdog.
Collibra has acquired trail ML, a Munich startup, for an undisclosed price. Trail ML builds AI agents that scan a company's AI systems, work out which regulations actually apply, and check whether the required controls are functioning. The agents can also step in and block an action if it breaks policy. The deal folds that enforcement layer directly into Collibra's existing data governance platform.
The EU AI Act's enforcement powers kicked in on Aug. 2, turning compliance from a paperwork exercise into something with real penalties attached. That timing makes an automated rule checker look less like a nice-to-have and more like insurance. Collibra, which has spent years selling data catalogs and lineage tools, is betting that AI governance is the next line item enterprises will pay for.
Expect more bolt-on acquisitions like this one as governance vendors race to productize a law that most of their customers still don't fully understand.
